Deception

Don't the pictures in cookbooks always look so cute?
And the instructions make it sound so easy. But then you try it yourself, and get this.It is much more difficult than I would have thought to separate the two halves of Oreos and keep the cream intact on one side. And, blow of blows to my ego, my six-year old was much more skilled than I was. Plus, my Wal-Mart does not carry mini M&Ms for the pupils. And where are you supposed to find chocolate-covered sunflower seeds (for the beaks) anway?
(These were the two cutest on the entire tray, and even they look a little wonky.)They were eaten quickly at the Labor Day Party, so they must have tasted good, even if they weren't nearly as cute as the ones in "Hello, Cupcake!"

I think yours were darling! I love owls. And those cook books are deceptive. They trick us into thinking this will be easy to make. Reality hits when you're trying to make easy home made freezable pasta that stays in crumb form that you could role out if you were allowed to run over it with your car:)

First of all, I'm really glad you used the term "wonky." I've been trying to debut wonky for a long time but it hasn't happened. Secondly, $20 bucks says its round white fondant. Nobody can twist an oreo that perfect. I don't believe it for one second.

By the way, SO excited we are coming to visit!

I think the cupcakes look like a lot of fun. Olivia is the master of oreo taking apart. Good for her.
Kelly's comment made me laugh out loud.

HA!! Em, I think your owl cupcakes are better than the magazine's. Most of your owls look a little mentally unstable, and I think they are all the more interesting for it.

Good work, Em, I agree with Kasey, it is fondant, I would bet on it, so yours were more fun too. I do this every year over the holidays, with recipe after recipe and always for a big event, forget the don't try a recipe for guests or something big, why not, you can always order Chinese if it fails, right?

I thought your pictures WERE the ones from the cookbook until I read your post. Silly Em, they look great.
